The NZ Dept of Conservation required that nothing be permanently disturbed on public lands as a result of filming so great care was taken avoid damage and to clean up afterwards. The site of the village in Rohan was on private land so the regulations didn’t apply. The burned sets were left behind. I have a chunk of charred wood and house stone from here with the permission of the land owner.
