Campground - A Way To Spend Quality Time With The Family

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Finding quality time to spend together as a family may be one of the toughest parts of being a parent. It may not be easy to get time off work, but with a little planning it can be done. Try a camping trip to a local campground, and see what type of hiking or walking trails they have. Or find a family campground as there are usually extra activities available for the kids. It does not have to be a long trip; as a matter of fact it may be fun to take a few weekend trips throughout the summer months. The important thing is that you are spending time together.

Before going on a camping trip make sure that you have everything that you will need. Kids love to help with this type of stuff, so give them a check list with some of the camping equipment listed or other “to do” tasks. Since they tend to get very excited while waiting for something like this to begin, get them some nature books, so they will be able to identify different things they may see while away. If you go to a lake campground, then they will no doubt have the opportunity to identify numerous plant and local life forms.

If you will be traveling in an RV, then you may want to make sure that the campground you will be going to has RV services available. Or, if possible, it may be best to locate an RV campground so that you will be sure to have everything you’ll need.

Boot Camp - A Term With Many Meanings

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

At one point in time, the military coined the phrase boot camp, derived from the footwear that is given to military trainees, and used it to describe the training process of becoming a soldier. It was measured from the time the recruit arrived at training camp, underwent weeks of training and finally graduated as a soldier. In more recent times, the phrase has been used to describe any number of “training” venues.

Obviously, the most notorious type of program, other than the original military use of the term, is when it is used in a correctional capacity as it refers to adolescents. Normally, these types of camps are within the US Penal System and many parents send their errant teens to these programs. It uses techniques that apply to military recruits and they are also taught socially acceptable patterns of behavior. Most times the pattern follows closely to what a military training camp would entail, not at all similar to what a youth would consider a camping hiking adventure.

The popularity of these types of base camp training programs has led several companies to figure out a way to incorporate the boot camp theme into their every day business. For instance, the popularity of a fat camp in general, perhaps indicates a need for a touch more discipline in all of us. Evidently, discipline may be in order because this type of program indicates that many overweight people are not successful in losing weight on their own and need the “hard work and don’t talk back” atmosphere, strict routines and rigorously filled timetables that at one time was strictly used by the military.

Are there other types of these camps? Yes, they are everywhere you look. There are probably some that you have never heard of, or some you can′t even believe exist, but one thing you can be sure of is that they are most definitely not like summer camp. In the 1980′s, Georgia and Oklahoma were the first to open “camps″ for prisoners, done mainly to reduce the population in largely overcrowded prisons, and as a preventive measure for those likely to commit crime again. There are also camps for things such as paper and essay writing, spiritual boot camps, baby boot camps and leadership boot camps.

The truest admirers of birds take delight in their natural abilities and marvels of flight, with absolutely not a single desire to cage, confine, coop, or hunt them.  These connoisseurs of such natural splendors of these fascinating and inspiring originators of winged flight are drawn to what is referred to as bird watching.

Backpackers Travel Insurance - Not All the Same

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

cheap hotels

Backpackers travel insurance requires more than just a basic policy. In fact, not all standard travel insurance policies will even cover incidents that take place while backpacking, making it difficult to obtain medical care or replace belongings during such vacations. In addition, standard policies do not cover some popular destinations, limiting the amount of adventure a person can have. Before you trek into the great unknown, it is important to know what insurance is available and what is best suited to your needs.

Standard insurance policies exclude anything that has the potential to cause a claim. Backpacking, as well as certain other sports and activities, automatically places people at risk of illness and injury because it involves leaving the paved roads and vacation resorts. Backpacking in wilderness areas and mountain trails, as well as overnight accommodations in cheap hotels and backpackers hostels raises a lot of safety issues. Insurers also consider people who participate in those activities more likely to be assaulted or robbed. A backpacker’s travel insurance policy is issued with an understanding of the risks involved, and offers more coverage than a standard travel policy.

Backpackers have unique travel needs, and their insurance must be geared toward meeting those needs. For example, with the range of popular destinations, backpackers travel insurance must cover more countries, as well as remote areas that standard policies overlook. Avalanches, natural disasters and acts of God can all be major factors for backpackers, and many policies offer coverage for them, although with specific conditions attached. Health coverage for backpackers often includes a provision for covering transportation to an actual medical facility. Finally, backpacker policies often offer the option of extending the policy, or changing the policy location area, an excellent option for international backpackers who get caught up in the journey.

Camping – Bond with Nature

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

Camping can be a fun filled pursuit. Enjoyable camping trips undertaken at a young age remain etched in the memory for a long, long time. There is no age for undertaking camping trips though. Such trips can be planned at any time as per convenience. Such trips may also be arranged in small or large groups as desired. Arranged outdoors and far away from modern habitations, such trips help create a special bond with the wilderness and with Mother Nature.

Preparation for developing the special bond with nature

In order to organize or enjoy camping trips certain basic requirements are called for. The tent is the first thing that is needed. This is important to provide housing for the campers in the tent as it is certainly not advisable to sleep in the open with wild animals being possibly around.

Useful Tips When Looking For Backpacking Gear

Friday, September 26th, 2008

backpacking equipment

Backpacking gear is essential whether you’re planning a backpacking hiking trip or just a quick hike during the day. It’s important to find the right gear for the right trip. To aid in this effort, be sure to bring your trip plans to the store with you. It will help a customer service rep to point you in the right direction. No matter what gear you buy, at any price, be sure it is of good quality. You’ll appreciate it if you find yourself in a dire situation.

For short hikes you don’t need as much equipment as you would for a long hiking trip, such as traveling to and backpacking across Europe. The chance of getting lost during any hike anywhere does exist though, so you should go out prepared no matter what. Of course, you will want a sturdy backpack to carry all the other backpacking equipment in. Gear that is a must includes a compass, extra clothing and food, matches, a water bottle, sunscreen, first-aid supplies, a flashlight and a knife. These are the essentials for any short hike.

For any trip the same items are needed as for that a short day hike. But, if you’re sleeping overnight, then you’ll need additional backpacking gear. This includes a tent and sleeping bag compatible to the climate you’ll be traveling in. Don’t forget a map or GPS (Global Positioning System) device to help you find your way. Add to that some fire starter material and instruments for cooking food, along with any food you may want to bring with you on your trip.

Backyard Bird Watching: Attracting Birds with Food and Water

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

For the avid backyard birding enthusiast, there are a few things that must be remembered at all times; don’t wear bright colors, don’t make any noise, and birds, like any creature, like food. If you feed them they will likely come closer to you than if you just sit in a bush quietly waiting for one to appear. As an added perk, the placement of a birdfeeder in your backyard might keep your neighbor’s from asking you why you’re sitting in a bush peering into the sky for hours at a time.

Having that bird feeder is a great addition to any backyard but it also makes it that much easier to get a peek at your quarry. What will you feed them though to keep different species flying through all times of the year? There are many options, but the most important thing to remember is to keep it varied. If you feed the same thing every day, all year, you’ll only attract a few birds at certain times of the year. A little variation will allow you to discover and watch a few different species.

Head to your local nursery, gardening center, or bird-feeding specialty shop for as many options as possible for feeding birds. Clerks there should be able to help you find exactly what you’re looking for to attract a specific species. Keep in mind though that no matter what kind of food you put out and how time sensitive its presence is, it does you no good if your food goes to other creatures, or worse yet can’t be found.

Africa Camping Safaris Enjoyed By Lots Of Travelers

safari guide

The African continent is immense and holds many mysteries and wonders that can make camping safaris a marvelous experience. Many African countries have wildlife parks and reserves that also boast fine camping facilities. In addition, there is also a vast selection of campgrounds that can be used as a base for safari travel excursions, which are affiliated and located near major hotels, lodges and resorts in a number of countries.

A camping safari is a very common choice for safari holidays partly because it tends to be less expensive than staying at the fine lodges and resorts, although there are also some luxury safari options for camping out in Africa as well. In general, travelers who are planning to take in the sights and sounds of Africa while camping have the option of either arranging for a private camping safari or a group camping safari.

Private camping safaris are arranged to accommodate groups as small as two people and for any size group that prefers to travel together but that don’t want to deal with strangers during their trip, with the exception of the safari guide and staff. Private groups will have separate camp facilities from any other safari group that might be touring the same vicinity and they have separate transportation as well.
