Choosing a Perfect Camping Location

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

An excellent way to do something other than the regular routine of your life like working, going to school, eating & sleeping is to go camping. It allows you to enjoy nature in a way that most of us cannot do everyday.

Tips on finding the best location for camping.
You will need to find a great campground before picking the camp site that will be perfect for you. Fortunately, the Internet has made this task a lot easier and many campgrounds now have websites. You can make an educated decision about your campground as most websites allow a virtual tour or at least have pictures of their campsites.
Keep in mind however that much like menu-pictures in a restaurant, a campsite always looks a bit more glorified than it actually is.

Before you can choose a campsite you will need to know which type of camping you’ll be doing. When a campground offers “primitive camping″, it sounds intriguing, but what does that actually mean?
At a primitive campground you will have to provide everything that you need yourself. This includes all shelter, gear, and any additional provisions. Primitive campsites are usually deep in the wilderness where you will not find electricity, water, showers, or even pit toilets.

At the other end of the spectrum, you’ll come across campgrounds that provide connections for water, sewage, and electricity - all with a glorious natural backdrop. You can even find spas at certain campgrounds!

What Are The Advantages Of Buying Used ATV Part

ATV Guides

Whenever you buy anything, there is the tendency to make a choice whther to buy the things new or used, but then this depends on what the item is. You cannot always buy things used, for example cars, buying a used car is normally and in many cases it is ideal but for items like computers or laptops then the idea may be less than suitable.

Now if the requirement is to but an ATV performance part then there are definitely important steps to take especially if you do not know whether you should buy the part new or used. Choosing whether to go for a used ATV part or not, means that you will first have to weigh in the pros and cons of the purchase in to order to determine which is the best way to go about it.

Pros

Certainly the most obvious advantage of buying a used ATV part is that it is definitely going to cost less than a new one. Sometimes a used ATV part can be as much as half of the price of a new item, and this means a lot of money can be saved.

Camping Safety Tips - Follow them and enjoy!

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

More and more people cut back on vacationing abroad during slow economic times. Many of these people find a great (and inexpensive) alternative closer to home in camping. If you don’t mind reconnecting with nature, then you should consider a camping trip for your next vacation.

Camping Safety
Camping can be great fun, but the basics are often overlooked. Follow these 6 fundamental camping tips and you’re off to a great start!

  • Do not leave without notice - Inform a family member, friend, or relative of your camping plans and location. An accident in the middle of nowhere can turn into a catastrophe if nobody knows you’re missing in the first place.
  • The Weather can change - It might be 80 degrees today without a single cloud in the sky, but that doesn’t mean it is going to be that way later today or tomorrow. Don’t take risks with mother nature, your tent could easily fall victim to brutal winds or large hail. You could also be overcome by a flash flood or blizzard. More likely though, it would just plain suck to have nasty weather ruin your camping trip.
  • Water - I know this one seems obvious right? You’d be surprised how many people leave without water and end up at a campground with no store or anywhere near. Water serves multiple purposes and is good for more than just drinking it.
  • You gotta Eat too - Keep in mind that not every single campsite has a store, some not even without an hour’s driving range, so bring your own food. You’ll find plenty of “what food to bring”-tips in the introduction to camping.
  • Dry Clothes - Bring extra clothing in case you get caught in a storm. Even summer can bring storms that can make the temperature drop well below comfortable levels. Don’t forget to put your spare clothes in a WATERPROOF bag.
  • Campfires and Wildfires - If you’re going to build a campfire, be sure to clear at least 20 feet around it. Also note that just because you took the necessary precautions doesn’t mean the camper a few miles away from you did. If you see a big plume of smoke in the distance, you better pack up FAST as wildfires can travel at insane speeds.

Wax Fire Starters: The Camper’s Delight

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

I am a big fan of camping, at least until I get out to it.  Usually, my biggest gripe with camping is trying to get a campfire lit to take the chill out of the morning.  Everyone is huddled around a dead campfire, teeth chattering, waiting for something to happen so they can warm up after a cool night in the tent and start making breakfast.

It never fails, the campfire takes longer than it did the night before but if you have the camper’s secret weapon, wax fire starters, you can get those campfires going in no time.  Not only are the wax fire starters weather resistant and handy, they are also a great way to get rid of your excess candle wax that you have lying around the house.

When it comes to making the Wax Fire Starters, it is very easy to make.  You should be careful since you will be working with hot wax and this is not an activity that I would recommend that you do with kids.  It is a craft that doesn’t need too many supplies and they are fairly inexpensive to make.

Hiking Through New Mexico’s Carlsbad Caverns

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

From the outside the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico are nothing special and consist of a few gray rock formations and a bit of scrub brush covering a not too cliff. But, inside this is one of the most wondrous landscapes to be found anywhere on Earth and, with over 100 limestone caves to explore, you can wander here for years without seeing the cave thing twice.

The Bat Cave is not for the feint hearted and is home to of thousands of these flying mammals. The Bifrost Room, which is named after the Bifrost bridge into Valhalla, is breathtaking and the colors here truly echo those of the rainbow spectrum of this mythical crossing. The largest open chamber in the system is The Hall of Giants which covers a staggering 360,000 square feet. Within all of these, and the many other rooms, you can discover some of Mother Nature’s most creative work.

The Witch’s Finger, a giant stalagmite, is a corkscrew structure which is more than five times the the average person′s height and the Rock of Ages is even more impressive as it makes stationary rock appear to move and the numerous flowstone outcroppings look like a demon′s lair glowing from within.

Within the caverns you can choose self guided or staff guided tours with varying degrees of difficulty from easy hikes through large open spaces to scaling 10 foot walls and crawling through narrow openings into large chambers.

Looked at from the outside the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico are anything but impressive and consist of a number of gray rock formations and a bit of scrub brush covering a less than impressive cliff. Snowboarding - Increasingly Popular

Monday, October 13th, 2008

At the moment there are lots of genuinely cool snowboarding games out there for nearly every last computing machine console that you can think of, there are also online games and PC games for you to try. It really is a lot of fun for those of us who want to sample the world of snow boarding through a game. A lot people criticise computer games and the way that they stop children going out and doing real sport and activities, and although this is the case with a lot of children I have found that many of the people that I know that have started snow boarding only done so because they firstly tried it on a computer.

Yes folks, I am talking about people that originally played a game on a computer then conceived that it was so much fun that they would give it a go in real life. This may sound crazy to a lot of you, but to me it sounds perfectly reasonable. The only problem is that games are made in a way so that they are more exciting, however pulling off some of the stunts that appear in the games is nearly impossible in real life, even for the most experienced snowboarders that I know and have heard of. What people have to do is keep a realistic idea of what they want to do and they are far more likely to attain their goals. This is what I thought, and it is one of the many reasons that I caution people about this before they get started. People are so used to doing things with little practise on computers, so they have to remember that doing things in real life can take far more practise and resolve.

The fact that computing devices games are bringing individuals to the slopes is remarkable, but I am sure that it is not only computer games that are causing this on their own. Snow Boarding has become a brand, it is associated with a certain lifestyle and that is why those who want to be cool, hip and freestyle are hitting the slopes. The truth is that the sport is now classed under the “extreme” category placing it on a pedestal next to motor cross, BMX and skate boarding. The rise of popularity in snowboarding also comes down to its similarity with other sports. Those who previously skate boarded and still do will find themselves naturally apt to handle a snow board and the same applies to skate boarding. Those who are used to skate boarding will find the thought of snowboarding appealing, even surfing could be classed in the same manner.

Buy a Kids Telescope and Explore the Cosmos

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

If your young star gazer seems to have a fascination with the stars and planets, consider buying them a beginner telescope.  We are not talking about a toy or a pirate’s plastic telescope, but a real quality telescope designed specifically for novice star gazers.   Now it is important to choose a telescope that allows for optimal viewing of celestial bodies while providing a clear magnified view of your targeted celestial bodies.  This allows the beginner to enter the amazing world of astronomy and take an important step in better understanding their universe .

What Type of Beginner Telescope Should You Consider?

With fewer moving parts and a simplistic, well-crafted design, the dobsonian telescope design has been highly recommended by some experts as one of the best beginner telescopes.  Others believe that an easy-to-use refracting telescope is the better telescope for novices.  In making your decision, a good source of information is the telescope user reviews found on many online telescope websites.  But, whatever your choice, select the kids telescope model that is tailored for new telescope users and one that can be set-up quickly and can be aligned and operates easily. While a  cannot offer custom or state of the art optics, ones from reputable manufacturers are generally quite satisfactory.  A word of warning though –  It is generally best to avoid “department store” telescopes.  These are generally of lower quality and designed for mass production at the expense of quality.

4 Essential Tips for The Novice Hiker

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Hiking provides hundreds of thousands of people with a great deal of pleasure and a sense of adventure every year and ninety-nine percent of the time it is anything but dangerous. But, people do have accidents and get lost from time to time and it can then become a very dangerous activity very fast if you are not prepared.

Below are just 4 basic safety tips to ensure that your hiking doesn’t get you into trouble.

Safety Tip No1 - Take a partner of friend along.

You don’t need to worry about heading out by yourself if you are going for a short hike in a nearby area on easy terrain, however, if you are heading out into heavily forested wilderness areas with steep canyons and winding trails then the likelihood of becoming lost or suffering an injury becomes very real and you ought to consider carefully whether or not it is to head out alone.

Taking a partner along has a lot of advantages, particularly if that individual is a seasoned hiker. After all, ‘two heads are better than one’ and if you do become lost or run into difficulty you′re much less likely to panic if you have someone with you to help solve the problem.

Learning How To Find Outdoor Gear For Backpackers

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

So, you’re all ready to go backpacking, but don’t know what to wear! How do you prepare yourself for backpacking trips? Getting the right outdoor gear is a great place to start.  Here are some basic items that you’re going to need for your outdoor adventures.

The Proper Footwear

If you’re going to be hiking all day, you definitely want to make sure you have the right shoes. Keeping your feet comfortable is one of the best ways to make the most of your backpacking excursion, and YakTrx has the perfect shoes to make hiking fun. You can even wear these shoes in the snow and ice to keep from falling, which is great if you plan on hiking during the winter. Your favorite athletic shoe brands, such as Adidas and Puma, also have great hiking shoes that will give your feet and ankles support as you climb steep hills.

Sleeping bags

At the end of a day of hiking you will most likely want to get some rest for the following day, and would want to cuddle into a warm and cozy sleeping bag. One of the best is Moonstone, and they have the sleeping bag that you will need if you want to stay warm during the night. The insulation of the bag is great and at the same time it is also lightweight, so it makes it easy for you to carry around when you’re hiking. However, if you want to stay cool but comfortable then perhaps you should use the Exped sleeping bag. This has just enough padding to keep you comfortable, and also has a thin lining the makes ideal if you want to have a cooler temperature.
